Because people can never learn to appreciate what they have until they lose it. Even the ones who say that they really appreciate the small things of their lives can't truly understand. You need to push your thinking beyond the limit to understand, or lose what you have, then you understand. It's because people get so used to the simple things that they forget the importance of those things. When you are hurt, for example, you are trapped in a certain part of the world with little or no chance of getting home, then you understand how good that boring life was, or how unfortunate life can be for others.

Because learning life lessons hurt. When you hurt yourself it can affect you emotionally, mentally and physically. I suppose you can only appreciate something once you don't have it. You cant miss what you have never had. So if you lose anything that will affect you mentally it hurt. But once to get over the pain, you appreciate the situation for what it is and you can reflect on what has happened. That's why you end up appreciating your experience. Hope that helped.

Love at the lips was touch
As sweet as I could bear;
And once that seemed too much;
I lived on air
That crossed me from sweet things,
The flow of--was it musk
From hidden grapevine springs
Downhill at dusk?
I had the swirl and ache
From sprays of honeysuckle
That when they're gathered shake
Dew on the knuckle.
I craved strong sweets, but those
Seemed strong when I was young;
The petal of the rose
It was that stung.
Now no joy but lacks salt,
That is not dashed with pain
And weariness and fault;
I crave the stain
Of tears, the aftermark
Of almost too much love,
The sweet of bitter bark
And burning clove.
When stiff and sore and scarred
I take away my hand
From leaning on it hard
In grass and sand,
The hurt is not enough:
I long for weight and strength
To feel the earth as rough
To all my length.

We don't. If you do, I would be concerned that there's a problem & you should talk to someone about it.
Don't hurt yourself. The most important thing to do to appreciate life is to love yourself. When you love yourself you are good to yourself, you take care of your physical body (eating right & exercising), your mind & soul (being kind to yourself, not thinking negatively etc). When you love yourself you open up to loving others, the world, life.
Follow your dreams. Do what you love. Live with passion. This is how to appreciate life.
If you feel a need to hurt yourself, then it's a dangerous sign that you don't value yourself. No one deserves to be hurt.
Mind you, I spent much of my life beating myself up. I was as self-deprecating as they come. I still am to some extent but I am learning to like who I am & to be more kind to myself. Much of my life I was negative & pessimistic. I'm learning to be positive. It can be done. Of course you can't always avoid being hurt in life. Some things are beyond our control. But you can control how you treat yourself. Be good to yourself. It's the only way to find happiness.

Why in the world do you think that you have to hurt and have pain in order to appreciate life? That is just downright ridiculous! Sure, life has its high points and low points...I guess the best way to appreciate life is to appreciate life's Creator!

I really dont think it is about hurting ourselves as much as it is about learning from our mistakes. These must be done in order for us to move to the next level.

Think of it this way, you can't know what happiness is until you've experienced sadness. It's the same thing with life, you can't fully appreciate the goodness of it until you've been hit with pain and horror. It's like you really don't know how much you love something until it isn't there anymore.

When we hurt ourself, we do it unintentionally and we learn a lesson from this.
So therefore it has a purpose and that is to learn from the hurt and appreciate life more as we benefit from the lessons.

We don't have to hurt ourselves. But our modern world is too consumed by anger and hate to remeber how precious life is.
