Get rid of programs you don't use. Get rid of spyware and cookies that have pile up over the years. Increase your RAM memory. Run checkdisk several times. That would be Run and type in chkdsk/f. Defrag your hard drive many times. Microsoft's defragger is so-so. Kick Norton off your computer. It is too invasive and takes too much system resources as do a whole bunch of other anti virus programs. I use AVAST -- it is free and works "quietly". Download Zone Alarm (free), Spybot (free), and Adware from lavasoft (free). And if you do have Norton, download the Norton removal utility from Symantec. Another suggestion is to buy a new computer. Shoot the last super slow computer I repaired for a friend had porno, thousands of spyware, eleven trojans and an overburdened hard drive. Oh and get this, he told me he didn't want me to format the drive. He wanted to save his programs. Yeah I restored his computer but never again.

Start > Run > Msconfig > Last tab: take away the checks from the program that you don't want to run at startup, but be carefull to not disable too much...
Apart from that, use a program called CCleaner to clean up your HDD and your registry, that way, your PC will run faster as well.
A last resort is either adding more RAM or upgrading the CPU.

Hmmm....... a little unclear. If you use XP or 98 then go to Start>Run then type " msconfig " and Enter. From there you can Controll the Programs that run in The beginning of Windows.
What do you actually want?

Run a spyware scan. I recommend http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/
Also, get rid of some files you don't need and try a disk cleanup by going to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup

Defragment your computer and also allow only 1-2 components on your autostarts!!! And also get the free CCleaner and also deletes all trash files you no longer need, etc...then, your computer might run faster again.
Free CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com

fragmented hard drive , not enough ram , to many cookies , to many temp files , to many items in the startup menu , these are all places you should look at
