Mine never did on their own--with either pregnancy. My mom's broke when she was having me while she was in a grocery store--and she said she gushed all the way home(she had polyhydramnios), then sat on the toilet. (LOL!) They didn't break with any of her other pregnancies by the time she went into labor. Many women go into labor without them breaking first.

With my 1st I had a condition called Polyhydramnious (excess anmiotic fluid), so I was stretched to the absolute max. I did break on my own at home 10 days prior to my due date. A good tip is to sleep with towels under you the last few weeks of your pregnancy and try to keep one with you in the car. Like everything else with pregnancy, it is a feeling you will never forget. You can feel the pop of the bag, and an initial gush of fluid. Then, there is usually a slow leak (a thick menstral pad will work).
Because I was so big and uncomfortable, I was sleeping on the couch. The funniest part of the entire thing was when I woke my husband up out of a dead sleep and told him my water broke and I needed another towel. First, he ran in a circle, then he ran to the kitchen and came back with a small wash cloth. I then had to calmly say, "Mike, are you awake? Listen to me, carefully. I don't need to clean up a little bit of spilled milk; my water broke; we are having a baby. Please get me something that will soak up a little more than a spoonfull of liquid!" He finally came back with a bath towel. At least it made me laugh at a time when I was excited, nervous, and uncomfortable.
Good luck!

When my water broke, there was no mess. It was a slow trickle.
To be honest, not everyone's water breaks, sometimes the doctor has to break it during labor.
As far as the mess goes. Don't stress it. Labor is a messy, messy business, so just relax. No one will think you are nasty or gross if your water breaks, it's not even a "dirty" fluid like urine etc etc, your baby has been breathing it...living in it for months, it's nothing "gross". Just think of it as spilled bath water. Though, as I said, not everyone's water breaks and it's not always a dramatic gush.....there is no control over where and when it breaks either..it just happens. Trust me though, once you go into labor, any paranoia about a mess or anything else will go out the window! Good luck!! Here's to a quick and easy labor and a tremendously beautiful, healthy baby!

Everyone has this hollywood movie version of water breaking. A waterfall that covers everything. That is not the case. It's not even water. It's a little slimy, but clear. With my daughter I was already in labor at the hospital and when the nurse came to check my dilation, she said "oh, when did your water break?" How'm I supposed to know? lol
With my son, I was at my mom's house, we had just got back from a stroll to her mother-in-law's house next door and I sneezed! I felt something sort of like when you are menstruating and you sit up after lying down awhile ( does that make sense). So I went to her bathroom and checked (because at that time I peed everytime I sneezed) It wasn't urine and it had a filmy, slimy feel to it. I hadn't had any contractions at all, so I just took a shower and waited for my doc to open. THey induced contractions and he was here four hours later.

I was induced with both my girls so th hospital broke them.
However when I was in the cubicle waiting for labour to kick in I poured my husband a drink of water and lid fell off and jug and the water went everywhere and 2 midwifes came rushing in. And it was worse cause my husband was lying in the bed trying to get a rest because I couldn't sleep!
Good Luck to you. My midwife say labour is just a day you have to gt through. Its all worth it in the end. After the birth take any pain relief you are offered don't try to be brave!

Mine both broke when I was at the hospital. With my first, they broke while the nurse was checking my dilation; with my second, I was on the toilet. lol.
Everybody's different, though. My sil had hers break before any contractions started. Mine both broke around the transition phase.
I think the stats about 'needing' the water to be broken are kind of weird. I wonder if it's an American thing for doctors to do that. They don't usually purposefully break the waters here.

Embarrassingly, my waters went with no warning whatsoever when I was in a shoe shop trying to get something comfy for my feet which had swelled up like anything! I wasn't due for another three weeks, and the poor lady who was bringing shoes out for me said "I hope you won't be having the baby here!" and I assured her that I had another three weeks, then POP water all over the place. Fortunately, I had just bought a heap of maternity pads from Boots on a buy one get one free deal so had about 4 of them stuffed into my pants until my husband came and rescued me! The shop gave me a £20 voucher which was nice of them! I took a box of chocolates in for the poor woman who'd served me.

In bed- thank god.
I wore a waterproof mattress cover on my bed from about 7mo on I was so paranoid.
Maybe you would want to start staying home from work if you haven't already. If you have to work bring a bag with a towel (to sit on), a big sweater to tie around your waist and a change of clothes. Also some pads would be helpful to plan your "escape" lol.
GOOD LUCK! SAFE AND SPEEDY DELIVERY!

with my son (now 7 yrs) the dr had to break mine in the delivery room.
with my daughter (now 4 yrs) my water broke in the car on the way to the hospital. i planned ahead tho, so we had towels layed out on my seat!!
and with my son (3 months old) my water broke on the delivery bed (on its own without dr help)
i was scared of making a mess too! i've heard so many horror stories like when women water break in the middle of the store or at work. i'm so glad i didn't have to go thru that embarrassment!
