As someone with extensive piano/organ training, being a qualified piano and organ teacher, and learnt a little ballet when I was little, how long would it take for me to learn before I can start to dance at competition level? I'm thinking of ballroom or Latin dancing.

Are you trying to compete as a Pro or Pro/Am? As Pro/Am (Professional/Amateur) you could start competing within 3 months as a beginner. If you want to compete as a Pro it would take the average person who ONLY practices for Pro comps and who has a experienced partner about 1 year. But that's just to get the choreography. You would enter comps and not make the final 6 for a while. It's rather hard to judge a time frame because there are SOO many variables! But your best bet is to find an experienced competitive dance partner and have him bring you up to speed!

The background in music and ballet will help a little. Competitions are stratified by level, so even as a beginner it's quite possible to compete. Just get started in the ballroom and let your personality and your instructor guide you. I didn't feel comfortable competing for a couple of years, but then I didn't go into dancing for the competitions.

I don't understand why you think playing the piano and organ will help you to become a ballroom or latin dancer. Also, ballet is much different then ballroom and latin, although if you are still flexible that will be a plus in the long run. How long it will take depends on who you learn it from, where you learn it, how dedicated you are, and your natural talent.

hope this helps!

I always feel bad when I skip a long question,so I tend to at least run over the text just to know what's going on in the question
