With Vista offering a very rich user interface - does Linux play a role for your typical home user?

It most certainly can. I used to run both Vista Ultimate and Ubuntu Linux, but I got rid of the Vista because it was, ultimately, just me trying to hold on to Microsoft. I no longer use any Microsoft products. I am completely reliant on Ubuntu. It is capable of all my media (including a TON of stuff that Windows wouldn't DREAM of working with) and all the office and internet tools I can even think of.

And of course, for those who like all the fancy stuff, there is stuff like Beryl and Compiz, with XGL. I use XGL with Compiz, and I am using a fairly new, lower-end system. And it works more beautifully than vista does on even the best of machines.

Oh, and it is virtually maintenence free.

Okay, that's a lie. It IS maintenence free.

I use Linux every day. For most normal computer tasks, Linux can be a perfectly acceptable alternative to commercial OSs. Most people won't ever try it because they don't really understand what an OS is, but those people also don't really make use of the full feature set of Vista.

Download a copy of Ubuntu or Knoppix (both LiveCD versions of Linux) burn them to a CD and run it. It will not install on your computer just run off the CD. It is difficult to say if Linux is better then Windows or Windows better then Linux since that is all a matter of opinion. Ubuntu is a newer distribution of Linux so I think that it looks and runs smoother then Knoppix, but then that is my opinion. Give it a whirl and find out for yourself.

base line: once you install linux you're taking accountability to your laptop in a manner which you're actually not once you utilize Windoze. in certainty, quite some the time you're voiding your guarantee by making use of installation Linux -- and in certainty the former head of laptop acquaintances went to reformatory for installation OpenSuse, i think, on a working laptop or laptop he were warned grew to become into in all probability to be subpoenaed (did no longer even get it back after forensics grew to become into no longer able to salvage any of the windoze archives). i do no longer care no count in case you're making use of a technical distro like Slackware, Gentoo, Debian or a UserFriendly (tm and copyright J. D. "illiad" Frazier) distribution like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. while the own laptop would not boot up you tell it what card or visual reveal unit you utilize making use of xorgcfg, xorgconfig or dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Windoze won't ask you. you're purely the consumer. There are good and undesirable factors to that -- the previous shaggy dog tale between Slackware purchasers was once "in case you visit cyberspace as root you will possibly be able to as properly be making use of Windoze". although some human beings HATE that. they do no longer CARE WHY they might desire to take accountability for what's on their no longer ordinary drives, they don't have time. we can't lead them to.

Since Linux is considerably cheaper, demands a lot less from your hardware, doesn't come covered in DRM and has a good collection of web browsers, email clients, IM clients, word processors (and other office productivity software) - yes.

Aero looks nothing compared to Beryl. Do a search on youtube for beryl and you'll see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=beryl&search=Search
Linux is not ready for the home market yet but for people who know what they are doing it's a great alternative.
