Perhaps because he's so far evidenced a great objectivity in his approach to politics, opening criticizing the Iraq war and that unconstitutional "Patriot" Act.

He seems like a good candidate (and I'm a Democrat). I'd like to see him and Obama in the same race...

Mitt Romney is the front runner from the party base.
Chuck Hagel wont get the nomination but I think his popularity is based on his maverick approach (and he's a Republican who hasnt been tainted by support for the war)

The Republican nomination for 2008 will either go to Guillani or McCain right now (both are way ahead in polls and with fund raising) but dont rule out Romney or Gingrich. Hagel is too much of an outsider to bag the nomination

Gee, I was unaware that Senator Hagel (R. Nebraska) had entered the race... in FACT, looking at his website, CNN and the FEC website, he hasn't even announced (amazing in this current 3 year election cycle [sarcasm intended], though he WILL be making an announcement Monday in Nebraska...

Regarding the NUMBERS, I submit this portion of an article from March 07, 2007 from CNN :

A CNN/WMUR poll conducted in February found him trailing the pack among potential GOP voters in the first primary state of New Hampshire, drawing just 1 percent support.

A national poll, conducted by CNN for Opinion Research Corp. in mid-January, also put him at 1 percent among registered Republicans. By comparison, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani led that survey at 32 percent, while Arizona Sen. John McCain -- Hagel's friend and frequent ally -- came in at 26 percent.
