As far as I understand it we are teaching children (at school) that we rule by bullying them. That's the main argument against. One of the arguments for is that young children do not always understand the complexities of societal living but do understand pain. Therefore the threat of physical violence is effective until they are old enough to reason their behaviour and control it themselves.

I actually think they should bring back some of the old ways.I see it like this when I was in school we didn't have punishments but we knew we would later when Mom found out. Then people weren't going crazy shooting up schools.(1985-1998) Now days kids don't care because the abuse people label everything abusive.Within reason I think spankings should be allowed. There are people that go nuts I see that as the bad. But I look at myself. I mouthed off I got popped and didn't do it again. My parents were the boss and that was that. Now it's the kids running things and people wonder what happened to the world.Full of disrespect and foul language, sex and crime. Parents these days aren't as involved or strict as they used to be.A lot have to work 1or 2 jobs to support the family.Let the parents be the parents and butt out. The government has enough trouble trying to handle the country, focus on that and leave the parenting ot the parents.

why corperal punishment? why notlet the sargents have a go.
and as for capital punishment, let some of the smaller towns be punished.lol seriously though, its not punishment we need.
society is to rotten to punish. So think of clean pure teachings
and law and leadership. these things seem to be unattainable in civilian life. but my thoughts are that this could be attainable in a small environment thats locked away from society.take your criminals to lock up college of human perfection and retrain then send them home as britains best
giving them jobs as teachers and leaders ect because they would be the only ones who had experienced perfect knowledg. i hope i have explained that right.

I'm not going to go there exactly. Children absolutely need to be discisplined. One thing against not usuing corporal punishment is that parents sometimes punish children by not allowing them to participate in something they like doing, like not letting them play soccer, baseball or even volunteer activities. That does more harm than good, you want your child to learn how to socialize and by denying them a chance to socialize when they act out is self-defeating. You want to get rid of the anti-social behaviour, not things that will teach them how to socialize. Gentle corporal punishment with an open hand gets their attention, it get's the punishment over with and if done rightly doesn't real inflict any pain, if you give them a bruise or a scratch you have gone to far.
Time outs only work if you are willing to stand there and take the time to make them stay in the time out everytime they act out. This involves taking them there ten to twenty times and involves an hour of your time. But if your really love your child you will invest the time. The problem is that many parents give one time out and wander and do something else. The child needs your time and attention and one time out doesn't cut it. But what happens in time outs is that you get a battle of wills. So an effective time out means you standing their and enforce it and the child will repeat the same behaviour as soon as the time out is up to challenge you. So the parent has to stay until the child learns that some behaviours are not acceptable. But time outs have one huge advantage. They give you time to spend with your child and after they have calmed down you can speak to them and tell them in a way they understand is wrong.
Children need attention when they are both good and bad, and that attention, not giving punishment when they act out or rewards when they do a chore or study, gives the child what he or she really needs. Time and attention, not punishment makes the ultimate difference.

What`s your opinion on this matter???
Capital punishment in my eyes is wrong.
But I do believe in Life imprisonment meaning just that LIFE!
Capital punishment has been proved to have executed innocent people - and the powers that be after realising their mistake and that they had hanged an innocent person can`t bring the dead back.
But a person serving a life sentence can be released if new evidence shows the person to be totally innocent of the said crime.
You can`t bring back a dead person......but LIFE should be LIFE.
Now I read that some stupid judge is saying that murderers are spending to long in prison.
What the feck is wrong with this damn man. The mind boggles.

Some people surely have done things that means they deserve to die, but where do we have the right to take their life?
The main arguments I understand for are: 1. Retribution, 2. Discouragement
1. Retribution rebuttal: by what right?
2. Discouragement: countries that have corporal punishment often have higher rates of violent crime than those that don't

Corporal punishment is an anacronism of the modern penal code. In todays society criminals should be re-educated and reformed so that they can become usefull members of society.
The bible teaches us to turn the other cheek, that murder is wrong, to forgive sins etc.
Murder and torture etc are wrong whether by an individual or by the state.
Oh sod it hang the b@#*@%^ds

No civilized state can condone or implement capital punishment. If the state cannot give life it has no right to take it. C.P is no deterrent to crime and serves only as revenge and retribution.
