I am from America and I believe I saw the tape you are referring to. And I do not agree with those peoples actions. I think most Americans feel the same way. There was outrage buy many in the states over these videos of the camp. It is child abuse and it is apalling. Children should be allowed to enjoy childhood. They should not be brainwashed and influenced in such a violent and tormenting manner. You are correct in your comparison to Afganistan also.
As for your question why, these people feel they must influence and manipulate the minds while young. No adult in their right mind would allow such nonsense. I feel the parents of those children at the camp should be held responsible as well for sending their children and allowing it to take place.
Sorry, I have to add comments about the replies you are getting. I don't think they seen the DVD. Teaching religion or your family beliefs to your children is not brainwashing. Scarying them to death by exposing them to intense violence of adult actions and creating fear and a feeling that their life is at stake is wrong. Those people have political intentions in mind as well. Giving your child to some wacko for a week to drill and manipulate to create crusaders is just like making bringing up suicide bombers to fight for your violent and crazy beliefs. Children should be taught peace and how to be a good human being. This is what will change our world for the better. Having a family, living in peace and by example, and explaining the religion of your family (going to church, praying...) is not wrong if it has peaceful and with good intentions.

Now I have no problem with a theory being taught, but it needs to stated that it is only that, a theory, but this is not the case, but does this constitute child abuse, when a person teaches another something that they absolutely believe to be true?
Using your logic I would ask then, if so why do people 'brainwash' ALL children with an un-proven theory called evolution, taught as if it were a proven fact in schools? So by the same token does this also constitute child abuse?
I know full well you can reply with examples where certain people are training children to grow up to be suicide bombers etc, something which they might believe to be absolutely true, correct and so on but this falls into the category of doing others actual harm and forcing others to believe what they believe against their will, which makes it a different subject.

I dont believe there is any problem with teaching children the possibility that there is a God or being that the human race has always looked to and sought guidance from to make ourselves better people.
But at the same time, scientific ideas that we were descended from apes also needs to be taught.
Leave it up to the kids to decide what they want to believe in as they are still young and have plenty of time to develop the hatred and arrogance that adults eventually develop with age!
At the age of 14, god knows i had better things to think about than any stupid religious debates (for me, Samantha Fox was my goddess!)

Why do you say brainwash? People socialize their children into what they believe. Are you saying that if your parents are Catholics and they take you to church with them every Sunday they are brainwashing you into Catholicism?
I am sure you will teach your children not to believe in creationism, as you are trying to do to us here. So aren't you brainwashing them as well as us?
Why can't we all try to be more tolerant?
