If you had recently reinstall Windows, this may happen.
Anyway, look for the drivers CD that comes with the motherboard.
Load the CD when the wizard needs to search for the driver.

If you do not have this CD, then go to internet and search for the name of the driver needed and download it ..they are free.

Sounds like for some reason or another, your sound card lost it's drivers. What you should do is find out what kind of sound card you have and reinstall the drivers. The driver you need depends on what kind of machine you have. Go to the manufacturers website and look under the support and downloads section to find the driver.

As for it being a virus or malware - it's not likely but it certainly wouldn't hurt to scan your machine to be sure.

No it is not a virus. You have lost the driver for your sound card or chip. This is why you have lost sound & your computer is asking for the driver for it. You should have a cd Rom supplied with your pc that will have the drivers for it. if you don't then you will need to find out what sound card it is & look up the company on the internet. They should have drivers that you can download. install those drivers & you're problems will be solved.

It's a typical driver mismatch problem, you need to identify your hardware and manually install the drivers. Go to the control panel-System-Hardware- Device Manager- verify the hardware and resources are working correctly no conflicts, and that there is only one, and update the driver.
