Probably not. The cable box wouldn't be authorized in the other cable company's system to receive any service at all and even if the box could pick up analog channels, the recording and guide capabilities probably would not work properly.

Unless the cable company you are trying to do this with is relatively behind in technology it probably will not work.

I'm not so sure on this simply because your entering the digital realm of TV... For a cable box to work with the cable company that provides some are just basic and pick up on all digital signals while some boxes actually login to the company's digital servers. Worse case scenario is it's not going to work. Give it a try...

As long as the other box has a slot for a standard CableCard you can use it to play not only free channels but also scrambled channels.
However, you will need to get a CableCard from your local cable provider (and they are obliged by law to give you one for a small fee)
In other words
Cable feed from local company + Optional Cable Card from local company + your own set top box with cable tuner , should work just fine.

pass with the Tivo till you pick an HD-DVR participant. The Tivo S3 helps HD yet is extremely high priced and for the lifetime it particularly is probable extra low priced just to hire the cable agency's version. whether, Tivo does have extra helpful aspects and that they are particularly ordinary to hack. i've got no longer seen S3 hacks yet, yet S2 hacks are considerable. this suggests you could upload added complicated drives (fee effectively) or replace it for a greater HD. I placed a 300GB HD in mine which initially got here with a 40GB. It has some hacks that help you do particular applications too (i.e. FTP transfers, and so on). i like my Tivo. It has particularly some helpful aspects that cable agency's don't have like cyber web scheduling, Tivo2Go, checking Yahoo! climate, and so on. The interface seems extra perfect too.
