I live in India and I'm going to go to college in the US. Obviously, I can't take ALL my legally purchased CDs with me but I would like to take some of my favorite songs from each album. Is it illegal?
The CD I make would be purely for my own use.

It's okay, just don't sell the copies.

I initially thought this would be alright too.
I reasoned: I legally bought the CD. I legally bought the laptop. Why can't I back up the CD, especially for my own use.
For example, What if I want to create an MP3 so I can listen to the music on my MP3 player?

In 1999, The Recording Industry Association brought suit in a federal court to stop this kind of use. Fortunately, the court decided that this kind of use - personal use copying - is allowed under the law.

But that court - the Ninth Circuit - only controls over certain states, including California.

My point? There is no general rule among states (or even among countries)!
I know this answer doesn't help you much. Like other users have stated, just keep the copy for your own use, especially since the Record Industry continues to bring law suits against students.

if u say u bought the songs, its perfectly fine to make a "Favourite Songs" cd. Just make sure u dont try to make money out of it (like dont try renting out or selling copies of the disk). Ur allowed to let others listen to the music (just lyk u r wen u own an album), but im not sure if u r alowed to share the music. Anyway, for your own sake, dont go telling everyone that u r actually doing this as it will save lots of hastle.

2 issues could desire to be the concern. a million. The force is a CD-R force and not CD-RW. meaning it could no longer burn CD-RW discs. 2. The the CD-RW disc has been closed off meaning you won't be able to upload any added records onto the disc. the only answer is to erase the disc. So, reproduction each and all the records onto the difficult force, erase the disc and then burn them decrease back onto the CD-RW.

As long as the CD does not have a sponsor label on it , and for your own use, no it is not illegal.

well my dear you would get into trouble if you took it to US.
Are you going to take a Computer or Laptop with you. Save them on the drive that would be better or else buy a USB memory key of 1gb or whatever and save them there when you get to US you can plug it into any PC and hear your Songs.
or Write down all the name's and when your in the US download them all over again!
