Venny, more years ago then I care to admit I came to Boston to go to college. I'm still here (granted it was only a few states away but still). You will fall in love with the town, and I would bet make many, many friends soon as you move into a dorm and start classes. To this day my closest friends are from BU, go figure!

The city is beautiful, unlike many other cities it has many neighborhoods that have small town feels to them. Unless you are going to BC, the biggest drawback is that you loose some of the "campus" feel. But you make up for it with all the pluses.

Have you been here to visit? Also you might want to check out the forums for whatever university you are going to and get a feel for it. I know my cousins found several sites like that, in case no one is reading on here. Just google the name of the school and forums. I think that would be a really good resource.

Just remember whatever your interests are, you'll find it in Boston. It's a pretty, fun city and I am sure you'll have a blast! And I'd bet after a day or so you will feel right at home.

Warren B doesn't know what the heck he is talking about. Sure, there is crime, but compared to other big cities, you have no worries. You will love Boston, You will meet a lot of good people. Show me a big city that doesn't have homeless. Show my any city or town for that matter that doesn't have some crime. The buildings are not run down, they are big and beautiful, The best time of year is Autumn in my eyes. Summer is to hot for me. Being on the shore, it's not a problem for some. So don't listen to that loud mouth Warren who probably doesn't even live here. Come and see for yourself and if you find you don't like it, at least you gave it a try, but I know you will like it. Good luck. And WELCOME

I graduated from uni. almost 4 years ago (I went to uni. about 2 hours away) but I live in a section of the city near a lot of the universities here so there are lots of students.

Overall, Boston is one of the best cities in the United States, especially for students. It is statistically one of the safest major cities in the country (there are a couple of neighborhoods that are not safe but if you stay clear of those areas the city is extremely safe). The biggest downside is that it is one of the most expensive cities in the country - cost of living is almost as high as San Francisco or NYC and comparable to Washington DC, which are all the most expensive cities in the country. But it does have great art museums, lots of universities as I'm sure you know, and excellent bars, pubs, and restaurants.

Where to live depends on which university you're going to, but in general the best places are Allston, Brighton, Cambridge, Brookline, or around Davis Square in Somerville. All have access to public transit, are near pretty much all of the universities in the area, and in general are good areas.

Warren B. is teasing you.

Boston is the most European-like city in the USA, as attested among other things that a greater percentage of people walk to work than in any other large American city. It is very cosmopolitan. It has the greatest concentration of universities and students of any city in the world. It has a low crime rate (comparatively, for American cities). Not that it really matters, but metropolitan Boston's Spanish speaking populations are also comparatively low (the most notable
immigrant minority is actually Brazilian and other Portuguese speaking cultures, with great restaurants and barbecues, by the way). The New England area within 250km of Boston is
one of the most lovely and charming areas of the USA and also one of the most tolerant and politically liberal (100% blue) and so the excesses of American culture are moderated.

Nothing in Boston but junk. Dont bother. The biggest dump is Dorchester and all the trash living in it. Very high crime rate.
Muggings, murders and all the stuff you dont need plus all the immigrints. Plenty of homeless people begging and robbing people and dont forget the spanish immigrints. There is nothing to see in Boston but old buildings and graves. Oh, and the spanish immigrints. Every dollar you spend 35 cents of it goes to the spanish immigrints. They dont work so someone has to foot the bill and the tourists pay the most. Watch out for the knives. All the spanish immigrints have them and use them. You will be better off going to a nice city like New York. Lots to do and see. Minus the immigrints. Great food and night life.
