Fiscal means financial -- usually the collection of revenues and the process of making expenditures. With respect to economics, it usually means the finances of government -- either the federal government or a state or local government.

For example, fiscal policy is a branch of economics that studies the behavior of various levels of government. The idea is to understand what effect the finances of the government are having on other aspects of the economy -- through its tax rates or through its expenditures.

Hope that helps.

Fiscal comes from the word fisc which means "purse". Take Fiscal Policy for example. Fiscal Policy involves how our government manages its "purse" and how this impacts economic conditions. The tools of Fiscal Policy include the tax and spend policies of the government. Taxes go into the purse and spending goes out of the purse.
