yes & no....
As a teacher I know that once kids reach jr high, the curriculum (esp the math) is above ALOT of their parent's heads. That means the internet is often their only source of help.
If kids are posting ALL of their assignment as a question... then it is abuse of the website. However, if they are only posting one or two problems then they are probably just trying to figure it out and that is the correct way to use the site.
When I (or my students--we do Yahoo answers as a class sometimes) answer questions I try to be sure to provide explainations and other examples. I also try to provide other internet sources for additional help.
What DOES annoy me is when they get online with BS like: how do I use these words in sentences---and there is a list of 10-20 words-- however, to be honest, i dont know if it is the question or the people that answer the question that annoys me more.
While Felix is right ("there" should be "their") he was extremely rude. I think this is a good question.

I got into trouble for telling my students this but here goes.
What you learn does NOT matter.
Most of what you learn will be rubbish in a years time.
Then why learn?
You would not go the Olympics with-out practicing your sport.
Education is just PRACTICE
I could teach you a whole lot of rubbish.
What matters is that you learn it and keep practicing.
As a baby you knew NOTHING.
Then your brain began to work and you learnt about a whole lot (e.g. that is Mummy, this is food, my legs move etc)
Then your brain had to organise information. This is what happens when you do home-work you are organising what you need for this work and what you do not need.
If you do not practise this you will probably end up a useless adult who gets into debt, takes drugs etc because you can not organise what is important.
LEFT BRAIN - RIGHT BRAIN your brain has 2 halves
One side does communication things - talking, writing, drawing, thinking of others - you use these a lot in relationships, sex, partying, chat rooms etc.
The other side does numerate things = counting, being logical, knowing about sizes - you use these a lot in games, sport, driving etc.
Remember 8,235,987,2,67, Useless list but keeps that side of brain working.
Remember a serghtyetyaikou not a real word but it has all the vowels init so it made you practice the communication side of your brain.
"If you don't use it you'll lose it". applies to sport, your health, your life and your brain which controls the lot

Students were never taught how to do their homework. That's why people used to pay me to do theirs. I was the only one that knew how to look up information in multiple books.
I force my kid to look up stuff in books. He hates it. But even when I'm on here, I use the dictionary. The spell check does not even recognize some correctly spelled words.
School needs to teach kids how to find info, instead of making them do the same repeat crap over and over. That's not how real life works.

A part of me says yes and a part of me says no. Yes because some students nowadays if they don't know what they're doing they'll just tend to leave it. No because it teaches them how to be responsible with their work.

students should in fact be guided through their homework until they can manage and during the process they eventually learn to work on their own.

Everyone has a right to use this site to ask questions. You don't have to read them or answer them. My objection is when (I guess kids) respond with "I dunno" or some other ridiculous answer. Is this their way of getting 2 points?
