It's based on a true story, there was a guy called Oskar Schlinder, and he did save alot of jews from concentration camps during the second world war. He was arrested for kissing a beautiful jewish girl at a party, the rest of the story I think is made up.
He was a member of the nazi party, but mainly because it made good business sense to be. Apart from helping hundreds of Jews escape certain death, he was not a really moral guy. He cheated on his wife, drank, stole, bribed people, gambled, all that jazz, but his heart was good.
