Can someone really be considered a friend if they tend to judge you and put you down? Their actions are kind, and thoughtful, but their attitude and condescension speaks disrespect. What kind of friend is that?

Tough question especially when the friend contradicts her words with her actions and her generosity with her condescension. I am not suggesting you try this , but this is what I did on a occasion similar to this. I stopped doing what I was doing when my friend insulted me as I was defending her to others. I asked her outright what she meant by that , and she said she was joking. I kept asking though and she finally told me that it was because I teased her about her directional skills....( Geography) when she kept getting us lost on one of our trips. My personality is one that is easy going and friendly with some sarcasm and humor thrown in , I tend to kid around more so than not, life is way to short to not enjoy it. I told her I would have understood if she had used a pain in the butt or neck or even some other word, but she said I was offensive, and that being such a strong word took me off gaurd. When I mentioned that fact she said I was making her feel stupid by thinking she didnt know what the word meant. That was not my intention at all, but I told her I was sorry that I made her feel that way , I told her that I was not trying to explain the word to her , but how that specific use of the word directed at me gave me the impression that I had said or done something really nasty to her . If a person is a friend noone should make them feel inferior or less than perfect. The friends that do that seem to have a low opinion of themselves so they need to make someone else feel the same way.
I think respect is important in any relationship not just love or friendship, If you do not give you shall not receive. hope this helped. Good Luck.

A dishonest person does not respect anyone nor can they be trusted unless one considers this to be the example of a good relationship. That would be all up to the person who decides who they hang with. If advice said with love, yes sometimes that includes being stern and is true it's not criticism. This is ONLY if it's true and no that's not disrespectful it's called caring. I would think the one that doesn't give a hoot or actively lies to a question posed to them should be the person one raises an eyebrow to then prays for.

VERY IMPORTANT to have respect and trust in any relationship! If there's problems you need to talk it out first before exploding since you'll eventually emotionally explode!
