You will never see a draft unless there is an army bearing down on the US from somewhere. If a major nation with a powerful military declared war on us you'll probably see a draft. Other than that, forget it. Enacting any kind of draft or selective service (without the reasons mentioned above) would be political suicide for anybody who did it. Not only for him/herself, but for his/her party as well. Nobody on the political scene right now has the brass balls necessary for that. These piddly disturbances in the Middle East don't even rate such a thought.

Today's professional military is not the same as the conscription military of the past. The skill-sets require vast amounts of technical training, unlike the past where most Army conscripts were 11B (Infantry). Those conflicts required vast numbers of "trigger pullers", because a traditional war fighting with a fixed set-piece Army necessitated it (Armor in the front, Infantry in the middle, Artillery in the rear).

Today's technology requires skilled operators and compensates for traditional fighting doctrine. Moreover, conscription erodes the professionalism of any fighting force. This is known not just by the military, but also politicians on both side of the aisle. Anytime you hear of a Dem demanding a return to the draft, it is nothing more than political posturing for the sake of scoring cheap points at the expense of or brave men and women in uniform.

America's high-tech approach to war doesn't seem to be working too good. At least, that is what the daily headlines from Iraq and Afghanistan suggest. A frail old man riding a camel has eluded the spy satellites and computer geeks of the 'new' army for 6 years now. These standoff weapons prevent the American soldier from getting his hands dirty, but they don't work in guerrilla warfare. Apparently the lessons of Vietnam have already been forgotten.
Furthermore, the Iraq war has had a negative effect on the US arms industry. No minor power country is going to invest in tanks, artillery, and combat aircraft when the USA can wipe out the whole inventory in a couple days with guided missiles.

I hope the draft comes soon so that everyone has an fairly equal chance to see just how much troops in Iraq are sacrificing for our country. If kids of senators, the wealthy and celebrities suddenly start losing their lives or their arms and legs maybe we'll get out of there quicker

I suspect that our army and marines are too small for a war with Iran unless we pull troops from Okinawa, Japan, Germany, Kosovo and aid our poor numbers with more troops that will have to be trained this year. It is inevitable. I am ready to go in my former capacity as Lt. Colonel but with crutches.

There's no need for the draft yet. All we have to do is send all of those yokels and redneck hicks and those other pseudo-intellectuals (they've memorized each and every re-run of Hew-Haw) that proclaim to support the war and have the enlist into the Armed Services... after all, they SAY they support the war... so... let's send them ALL over to Afghanistan and Iraq! They claim to be so gung-ho and patriotic and claim to be so brave... let's give them all a chance to prove themselves!

I give you my solemn word that I will not protest nor will I miss any one of them.. in fact, I'd gladly cheer them on as they board the plane to Afghanistan or Iraq!
