A university studied this recently and found that we only really look at the first and last letter in a word and the order of the rest of the letters, providing they are the correct ones, is less important.

Yes it does matter. Because it's a pain to read text with numerous spelling and grammatical mistakes.
MacOS X has a built in spell checker, I assume Windows will eventually. But until then, please use the built in spellcheck in Firefox and Office.
Offensively bad spelling says to me that someone is either ignorant , or just lazy. Either way, they're not someone I want to deal with.

Apparently not so long as you have the right number of letters and the right letters in there somewhere. And as long as the first and last letters are in the right place. The brain fills in the rest!

Yes it does because like all of these people are saying our brain is able to work out what the words are but if nobody knows how to spell correctly how can we work it out?

Yes I can understand. Apparently as long as you have the first and last letters in the right place, your brain will unscramble the rest as you never read the whole word normally, just skim.
