Let's plan out your daily itinery (based on the average human's life):
Morning breakfast- Coffee shop in housing estate, roti prata/nasi lemak: S$3.
Travel from accomodation to work/ school- Depends on how far you have to travel, and how. Mrt costs a bit more than bus and taxi fares are too high to actually consider. Bus service: S$1 or less. Mrt: S$2. For bus services, the seasonpass works better, about S$25 each month for unlimited rides.
Lunch: S$10 or less, excluding drinks
Shopping: S$25 or less, depending on what you're buying, from groceries to just a treat.
Travelling home: S$3 or less
Dinner at restaurant: S$30
Accomodation: Rent S$?
Total excluding rent: S$74 or less. Range: S$60-$?

Depend your expenses including lodging. Transportation and foods in Singapore is considered quite cheap, comfortable and nice. But lodging may cost a bit more. You can have a decent meal with about S$5 - S$10. Moving around from one end to the other end by MRT cost you less than S$3. Thus S$50 is more than enough exclude lodging.

The Singapore dollar is on par with the Australian dollar but food and services are much cheaper in Singapore. Allow $30-40 dollars a day -plus travel. Assume comfortable is not 5 star comfort.

I find that on a budget you can survive for $35 USD per day, staying in Chinatown and eating simple food.
If you want to be more comfortable, $100 USD is a nice point.
Since your question doesn't sound like a tourist question, I'd say you need about half of the amount you spend in the US to maintain a similar lifestyle. Thus for me $1250 USD would be plenty for a nice life.
Cross the border to Malaysia, and the prices drop drastically. Fly to Hong Kong and the go through the roof!

You will need quite alot.
Singapore has high standard of living.
The only 1st world country in Southeast Asia.
Among the highest standard of living in the world. Definitely not the top3.
Why not go to cheaper countries like Phillipines, Vietnam, and Indonesia?
