Currently have AOL as my ISP, and don't see why I should pay extra while not at home for wifi. Its all set up and ready, but when I'm away can't I just "log on" to a hot spot without the trouble of going into a cafe/bar etc and paying? Or are there good joint Home and Wifi packages available, although I don't really want to leave AOL (reasonably satisfied with it).

Cellular carries are now selling Wi-Fi service that is functional in most areas that they carry cell service. With that method you do not need to be in a hotspot to take advantage of your wireless. Different carries have different plans, check with them.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be many roaming packages available where you essentially have access everywhere.
T mobile have a lot of access points and one of the big companies for london at least is "the cloud" they have access points in airports and stations.
