NCAA Basketball runs a 64 team bracket. Teams can make this playoff system by either performing sufficiently during regular season play or if they win their conference tournament. The conference tournament is a smaller scale tournament which places teams based in the same region (conference) against each other. The winner of each tournament automatically gets a bid in the 64 team brackets. The rest of the bracket is picked by a selection committee at the end of the season. They take into account win-loss records, conference records, key wins or losses, Power Ratings, strength of schedule...etc. The selection, by the way, is tonight. Once the 64 team bracket is filled out, the first round of play begins. 64 teams play 32 games and the winners all advance to the next round. This continues down to 16 (Sweet Sixteen), 8 (Elite 8), 4 (Final Four), and 2 (National Championship. The winner of the last game is crowned National Champion.
