I seem to remember that "an" preceeds a word that begins with either a vowel or a silent "h" and "a" preceeds a word that begins with a consonant. I get confused when newsreaders and the like seem to stress the "h" sound in expresions like "an hotel". Am I missing something?

You are absolutely correct and it is indeed AN HONOUR for me to answer your question.

Before I travel out of town, I would choose A HOTEL near all shopping centres.

The newsreaders are only human. However, they surely should be more grammatically correct than us mortals...but then again....

So, do not feel confused now. Take care... I am in A HURRY to answer other questions after this...cya....lol.

I thank Allah SWT that I do. At school and stuff I'm usually a "loner" so I use that time to reflect about all kinds of things, and sometimes it's like a conversation with Allah, you know? It's a wonderful use of time and I prefer that to being around a lot of people.:)

Let me enlighten you.

It is correct (but optional) to say 'an hotel' 'an horrific incident' 'an horrendous crash' 'an hospitable environment', even though the 'h' is sounded. This is permitted if the first syllable of the word is not stressed.
So it would not be correct to say 'an hurricane' 'an handsome man' for instance, because the first syllable is stressed.

Don't know why, but that's just the way it is.

Newsreaders generally are correct because it is their business to know these things.

'Hotel' has been taken from the French language and therefore should be pronounced without the H - like 'cafe', also taken from French we don't make it rhyme with 'safe' We pronounce it as they would.
We say 'an hotel' because otherwise we would be putting 'a' before a vowel sound.
PS 'H' is the only letter that you will find spelt in the dictionary - as 'aitch', because even saying the letter H shouldn't produce a hh sound - so you would say an H.

there are always expceptions to the rules.
in this case it seems to be that when the word is from the french - where they would not pronounce the 'h' - you use *an*. it is *an* hotel, but *a* horse...

news readers are *always* right!!!

No, you're right, they say it wrong!
This was a massive thing when I was little and it drives me crackers when the news readers get it wrong!
Unless of course, WE were taught wrong, in which case - oooops!
