The advice to ice works well, normally. Give it five or ten minutes once an hour or so, but don't leave it on too long. Ice reduces inflammation in damaged tissue and eases the pain that way. Heat feels nicer, and will relax tight muscles, but can make inflammation worse.
Don't stay too still; start by lying on your back and trying to wriggle your hips over towards the left, then work them back towards the right first of all.. As the discomfort eases, try lifting them off the bed, and as it eases more try turning over and wriggling then to the left and right as before. Be aware of your body and stop if you feel the pain is getting worse, or if it starts hurting in your leg or arm.
Try googling the words; 'Osteopathy', 'Chiropractic', 'McKenzie Institute' for local practitioners, many of whom do house calls. In the UK, Osteopaths and Chiropractors are state registered like doctors, and there are online registers.

I suffer with back pain intermittently, have done for years. If it's muscular, get up and walk! Thats what I was advised, and I thought they were kidding, but it's worked this time. When it's sciatica, I can't move at all, and usually entertain myself my annoying other household members.
This last time, only a week ago, I got thoroughly fed up and decided to t-cut my Landrover. I had to ignore the pain and carry on, and realised that after an hour of so the back pain had gone!
Hope this helps, ps, please don't cripple yourself and then blame me...

Gosh I am sorry for you - I have been in that situation, without the blessing of a laptop. Play spider solitaire until you are mindless - search the internet for books online - re read any book that you enjoyed. Can you manage crosswords - play anagrams in your head. I am sure a glass of wine or two won't interfere with any medication you are taking as you aren't driving.
Get well soon.
