is it true that anyone can be taught how to fly (you don't have to be all that bright) compared to aeronautical engineering which you have to be quite intelligent to understand all the concepts.any truth in that?

Well sort of. I majored in Aero in college and have some hours in both single engine and dual engine prop planes.

Anyone can learn to fly, it is a motor skill and some basic precautions, though the less wise will be more likely to eventually make a fatal mistake.

Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering is more of an intellectually demanding pursuit but you don't have to be a genius to do it. Of course the best in the field are geniuses, but hard work and attention to detail are just as important and in some cases more important. It only takes one mistake to turn a great idea into a flying time bomb. (Just look at the F-104 Starfighter for example)
