The insurance will pay for a new laptop and you'll have to copy everything back on from your backup. If you haven't got a backup then at least you'll have learnt to keep one.

Using the serial number means that if the laptop is psychically found and the serial number matches the laptop then the cops simply know it belongs to you.
The only trouble is the tag and files can be removed from the system if whoever stole the laptop is aware how to do so.
If it is a branch laptop - ie. Dell then the serial number can be traced online, so there may be hope yet.
However a stolen laptop is low priority and hard to find.
The cops sadly may not take the time to find it.

Sorry about you loss but unless you had homeowner's or renter's insurance, the only thing that you can do is hope that the police find it. Taken the serial number is basically the only way that the police can identify your laptop, so that is a good thing.
In the future, if you purchase a new laptop or your old one is found you should purchase LoJack for laptops. You have to purchase yearly subscription to the service but it's will worth the money.

No worries, I'm sure your house insurance will cover the theft. Depending upon your policy, you may have to pay part of the money, but in most cases your insurance rep will help you with the process of getting a new one. I had a camera stolen and the house insurance paid for a completely new one which was a newer model. There is a question of proving the cost and replacement value, but your insurance rep will help you if you no longer have the receipt. I'm sorry that this has happened and wish you luck.

Unless you had homeowners or renters insurance, no you do not get a discount. The police took the serial number so that in case your laptop turns up, the can trace it back to you. If you do have the insurance then you will need to go through your insurance company and file a claim.

Im afraid that you can not get ANY rebait and/or discount because as soon as the laptop leaves the store its your responiblility. Although you may be able to go back to the store and ask them.
- good luck

it means that if they find the laptop you will get it back. but they won't go looking for it since you probably do not know who has it. it will most likely be sold to a pawn shop or maybe on the internet, in which case you should be looking for it.
