guess it depends on the type of consultancy you need.

the overall price will be affected by the amount of work to do the time it will take to do the work and the business they work for as bigger business tend to charge more as you atuomatically expect they have the experience and know what they are doing... kinda like paying for the brand

smaller establisshed companies may charge less because they have less depts to feed from that one payment

some people will say you get what you pay for but that isn't always the case. whats important is experience. best option is to ring up a few explain what it is that needs doing and ask for quotes

Depends. Many are hourly.

I used to charge up to $175/hr. If you took the range $100 to $175, then you're looking at $800 to $1500 a day.

Keep in mind that some may give limited consultation for free, and if you're starting out and might need them long term, they might do a break. If you think you might have a longer need, see if they'll do a fixed-price consultation (say, $500) for certain stuff.

Most of this stuff isn't written in stone. If you're dealing with the principal directly (the person who bills AND does the work) you can probably make a deal.

Recently, I notice marketing consultants in the U.S. are charging about $150 to $200 an hour. There is a fr.ee introductory session while you both assess what you need.

It is much cheaper by the month - about $1500 with a two or three month minimum.

This is not written in stone, though. Perhaps you can work out rates during the introductory session.

Good luck.
