I'm guessing Tesla's machine makes another one of him so he has to kill it. But that concept sounds stupid. Also why does Caine's character betray him.

he can't have a clone of himself walking around the place, or he'd end up with a bunch of himself after doing the trick so many times, and people would figure it out. Caine betrayed Jackman because Jackman's obsession had gone too far, to the extent of framing Bale for his murder and also Having seperated bale from his daughter, and jackman adopting her. He'd just gone too far.
