Historically, the National Political Conventions choose the presidential candidates. However, in modern times the presidential candidate selection process has become a candidate-centered process. What changes have occurred in the selection process that have made it more candidate-centered, rather than party centered?

People used to vote to a large extent along party lines. If a person was registered Democrat they voted a Democratic ticket and the same way with Republicans. Perhaps because of the news media and knowing the candidates a little better people are voting for the individual instead of along party lines.
