A friend of mine bought an emachine from someone they knew, it was supposed to be brand new but when they set it up, it had alot of stuff on it that they will never use and it was really slow. I suggested a fresh installation of XP Home and they went and bought it from Best Buy. We followed the instructions and installation seemed to be successful but now Windows can't detect her internal modem or an external modem we tried. The troubleshooter will only take us so far without an internet connection, so now we're stuck.

The OEM version of XP you friend purchased at the store has default drivers for most pieces of hardware. When dealing with name brand systems, eMachine, Dell, Gateway, etc, then you run into proprietary hardware that requires proprietary drivers. Goto the eMachine web site which is http://www.e4me.com/, search for the model of eMachine they have and download the drivers needed, install them and you should be good to go.

What you need to do is download the drivers for the modem. You can do this without the internet, you need a disc. I do not know much about these emachines, but Wal-Mart sells them. Tell them about the situation if you do not have any discs with your computer.

You can also repair your connection. With XP, you need to go to the start menu. Then find where it says connect to, and move the cursor over it. This will bring out the menu. Go to show all connections.

You should be in a folder called network connections. There will be different connection icons in this folder. Right click on the name of the connection or modem that you use. Here you will see different options. Click on repair.

Much of the time, this works, but if it does not, you should try to contact someone from the emachines company.

Microsoft is constantly updating their software either through newer releases or updates via internet.

If you have any disc or floppy that came with your modem use it when Windows XP announces that it found new hardware.

If this dosen't help, you may need to contact the modem manufacturer and ask them to send you the drivers for it.

Hope this helps.

Windows XP detect a lot of hardware, but not everything. What you want to do is find the manufacture of that hardware and go to their site and see if you can download a driver for it. Once you install that it should work.

Here is the link for emachine: http://www.e4me.com/support/product_support.html

win Xp does not include every driver for every item. You need to search the internet for the make of these modems and download the driver. Then simply "point
" to this driver when Windows asks you to.
