Studies of sea-floor spreading demonstrate that the Earth's magnetic field reverses periodically. What will happen next time it does this? Will there be any signficant effects on people's daily lives and technology?

A geomagnetic reversal is a change in the orientation of Earth's magnetic field such that the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south become interchanged. These events, which are believed to last a few hundred to a few thousand years, often involve an extended decline in field strength followed by a rapid recovery after the new orientation has been established.

Some say 2012 this may occur!

It's a matter of great speculation, but no one has been able to establish a projection that has any level of confidence. The effects could range from insignificant to catastrophic. There seems to be evidence that not just the magnetic poles, but the geographic poles have shifted 7 times since man appeared on the earth. These shifts, of course would have been cataclysmic, yet no one has been able as yet to advance a credible theory on what could cause such a massive event.
