The first answer is totally incorrect. The reason so many people in North Africa converted to Islam is precisely because they wished to avoid being enslaved. Islamic law expressly forbids the enslavement of Muslims, and many of the Africans who maintained trading relations with the Arabs converted to Islam both to secure their freedom and to increase trade.

Depends on the area, some parts of Africa were heavily christianized, yet kept animalist traditions. Some preisteses were ordained and also tradional spirtists.

every one who became Muslim they did so because if they didn't they would have had to pay a lot more tax and would have been discriminated against or even killed. so they didn't have any choice really.
