When will people stop saying "0207" or "0208" when quoting London phone numbers?

Probably never. Not helped by a number of businesses who are incapable of realising that the area code is 020 and that the 7 or 8 is simply a prefix to the old telephone number so insist on putting 0207 or 0208 as the area code on their signs.

If people haven't worked out, by now, that they still have to dial the 7 or 8 if dialing another London number so it can't possibly be part of the area code...they will never work it out.

It winds me up too and I regularly correct people.

It's crazy. Everyone thinks there are 2 different codes for London (0207 and 0208). But that stopped ages ago. Now, all London numbers they begin 020. This is the area code for the whole London. After the 020 comes xxxx xxxx (8 digits) numbers. If you live in London you can dial the 8 digits and it works. If you live outside London you have to put 020 in front.

0207 and 0208 not area codes! People very crazy!

Yes....Ours was EX 1-1592 (EX for Express). Funny how something like that can stay in your memory! Some of the other exchanges that I remember were, "Taylor, Hamilton, Franklin, Lakeside, and Riverside". When I was young we lived in the country and were on a party line with one other family. We could tell by the ring if the call was for us or for them. If one of us needed the line to make an important call, we would politely ask for the line to be released briefly. I don't remember having any real problems with sharing the line. A party line was o.k. in those days because that's all we had and knew no different. We were just glad that we had a phone. And in another small town, my grandparents had the old crank wall phone with only 2 or 3 digits in their number. They had to turn the crank and go through "Central" to make a call. My how times have changed....It was fun thinking back.

0207 and 0208 really are the area codes for London.

why? Central London numbers begin 0207 and outer London 0208.. Thats a fact - it's not wrong to say this is it?

They have to include the area code, 207 for central and 208 for outer London, in order to give you the right number. Otherwise, you will not be able to get connected to the right person.

All the best!/
