I bought a Christmas tree and the man I got it from told me it was "partially rooted". It's still in the bucket in the garden and looks healthy. Do you think it could survive if I plant it in the garden, or will it gradually just die? If you think I should plant it, would it do better in a damp area or an area that gets more sunlight? Thanks

Unless you have a large garden plot to give it a home, that is far away from your house, then I'm afraid I'd have to suggest that you either keep it pot bound, let it loose in a forest or... re-cycle it.

Picea abies (Norway Spruce) is a great, traditional Christmas tree, but it is not a suitable tree for a small garden.

These trees can and often do reach 60ft plus in height and like many conifers, aren't particularly deep rooted. So in a heavy gale there is a danger that it can fall on your property.

If you do decide to keep it, plant it as far away from your home as possible.

As a tree surgeon they have one great benefit for our profession... we are often called in to fell and remove them once they get established and begin to reach their adult height.

If you want a clear conscience, but don't want it in your garden, then find a place out in the woods somewhere and let loose in the wild (make sure you get permission first of course).

Hope that helps in some way. Sorry I couldn't be more enthusiastic.

If it is still green and the needles aren't brittle, you can probably go ahead and plant it. Most evergreens prefer open space, moderate water. Before you plant it though, make sure none of the roots are starting to grow in a circle from being in a container. If you see any, just snip them back with some pruners. Circling roots will kill a tree in the long run.

I'd plant the tree in a well damp area, so the roots can continue to grow.

Plant it out but check the roots in case they are becoming pot bound if so tease them out gently so they are not clogged together or in a circle and then plant making sure to cover the root ball!

I have seen people that plant their xmas trees in their gardens and they had no trouble ...they have'nt grown very tall but they certainly look healthy. In your case i'd say you have a good chance providing you add a little compost and water it well.
