That he walked away smiling sets off my red flags. He may indeed really like you and find you easy to talk to...or he may be playing games. In this day and age, some guys have figured out that a good way to reel in females is to have you feel special because he's confided in you when you barely know him. Gives him the feeling that he has you on a stick. He could be a confused guy trying to express how he feels about you (especially if his feelings scare him) or he could be stuffing with your head and emotions.
Trust your gut - take a deep breath and decide whether you are willing to trust him. If something feels off, it usually is, or at least not 100% open and honest. Did he feel genuinely vulnerable when he shared with you or did it sound like he was telling you a story?...and another thing - forget about it - we girls have a tendancy to obsessively think about stuff and have conversations in our mind and draw conclusions way past the reality and react to our emotions about these imaginary conclusions. Don't give your power to this incident. It was just another thing that happened in your day

I think before coming to any conclusion just find out whether he is really serious about you..or just flirting with you...just dont get carried away..afterall you are just in school...just keep trying to take an answer from his conversation...I think if he really likes you he may propose you.
