Final Fantasy- What does the spell float do? (particulary FF12)?

I've never used it before. When would i ever need to?

I guess there isn't a way to tell beneficial traps from the bad ones right?

Float spell helps your whole team to avoid traps. But there are beneficial traps that you will float over too. Equip a team member with Libra and you can see the traps marked in red. Sometimes, the trap is on a treasure and you'll need to float to get it.

Float Spell also renders your team immuned to Earth Element Attacks. Very helpful when you encounter a difficult boss fight against an Esper late in the game.

Well, the whole party floats! It keeps you above all the stupid traps, some areas have alot that are hard to avoid because the other members of your party are pinheads and run them over! The biggest downfall is when it wears off you drop to the ground, I did, right on a TRAP! I've only used it a very few times,it is pretty useless.
