You just have to be careful where you go and what you touch. There are a few things in the outback which may give you a bit of trouble. Stay away from any large snakes, You get a lot of Brown snakes outback, which can grow to around 7 or 8 feet, and are golden brown to silver in colour. Some parts have the small scaled fierce snake, which they say is the most deadly land snake on the planet (I don't know if they are or not) But they are in a small localised area. You can get some large spiders, but generally harmless. and DO NOT swim in any suspect rivers/lakes etc in some parts of the outback, there are BIG crocodiles (Crocs) 18 feet long, and you will be there one second, then gone the next, Give them the respect they deserve, they can run and swim faster than you can. I can't remember if the Queensland coast has the box jellyfish or not, but stay away from them too, as well as the blue bottle, they can give you a bit of a nasty sting. And also, be careful of some kangaroos, they can kick you too, I have seen plenty and never had a problem. But, if you use common sense, you will be ok. Just be aware of what is around you and where you are. I have spent a bit of time in the outback and have not been eaten or bitten yet. Don't be put off, If I asked someone what is dangerous in America they would be bears, cougars etc, but how many people get eaten by them, Not many, lol. Be aware however when travelling in the outback, you can drive for 400km without seeing another car or homestead, you may still be on the same road and in the same state. Take plenty of water, and make sure the car you drive is in good condition. Words cannot describe how vast and (How alone) you can be in the outback, it is something you can only experience for youself, commercial radio, mobile phones etc don't work in some areas. Just have fun, and do what the locals do. Oh and fear the Kangawallafox, they love American and English tourists, and can eat one in seconds. lol.

Bill Bryson is a very funny, sarcastic travel writer who writes brilliant books. My fave is notes from a small Island where his anecdotes are halarious-as an American touring the UK ((quite exaggerated but very funny)) If you go to www.randomhouse.com you can find out more.

Very funny author - he makes the everyday life of people hilarious -I would definitely recommend you read Notes from a Big Country - it's all about American culture - he's also done England and Australia too. I love his books, very funny, makes me laugh out loud!
He is American but came to live in Britain (he has a British wife), so he knows both cultures.

i agree with joey, 'notes' has got to be one of his best books, he has written quite a few now about his travels and his life. if you like a laugh you must read them, they are hysterical! many times I've cried with laughter just reading, and believe me I've read them over again. if there's a writer that can even match him I'd love to know. its not just about the laughs though, hes travelled the states, Europe and Australia. 'a walk in the woods' is his account of him and his old pal Steven katz (bill b fans will tell you Steven is one of the best parts of 'notes') walking the Appalachian trail, they are also very informative travel books. you must read one!
