there are many expansions available,what are espansions and what are there uses?

You do need the Sims 2 base game, but it just needs to be installed on your computer and you don't need the Sims 2 CDs for the Seasons installation.
Expansions to date:
1) University - Take your Sims to University and have them stay in dorms or buy their own houses.
2) Nightlife - Dating and a downtown.
3) Open for Business - Open your own business and sell things, open a restaurant or charge people to come to an entertainment complex.
4) Pets - Train, love and breed your own special pets.
5) Seasons - Live through storms, build snowmen, have snowball fights, garden, fish...

Expansion packs add to the base game, usually by adding a whole new dimension to the game or by adding a twist to it. They can make the base game (Sims 2) much more fun, especially if the expansion is something that you like. They also usually come with a lot more items and ways to play, eg. Nightlife came with cars, Seasons and University come with many new career paths and rewards. All the Sims expansions also come with a...mystical creature making gameplay more interesting.
