The egg. Whatever chickens evolved from were hatching out of eggs already. Eventually, what started hatching from the eggs were chickens.

I would have to say chicken, because an egg couldn't hatch well without the warmth of the chicken, and the egg would be vulnerable otherwise. But it's a cycle, and it gets confusing, but I think the chicken option would be more logical.

surprisingly, though this question has been around for ages, there IS an answer...
...birds are descended from dinosaurs and are, in fact, very close relatives to many (now extinct) dinosaur groups. Dinosaurs laid eggs. (we know this, as many fossilised examples have been found) So, over the millennia evolution gradually changed the original dinosaur form through successive births and mutations until (one happy day!) there was a chicken hatched.
Hence...the egg really came first! (But the beastie that laid the egg wasn't a chicken, just a predecessor)
