First, Egypt would fall under the clasification of "North Africa".

Second, "Middle East" seems to be very loosely defined, but I have never seen Egypt being left out of the "Middle East".

In this sense, I would say Egypt is in both "North Africa" and the "Middle East".

It used to be part of North Africa.

But after the founding of Islam only 1400 years ago (youngest of the world's major religions), it was invaded and taken over by Arab Muslims.

They killed off many of the indigenous Egyptians (descendants of those who built the Great Pyramids) and took over their cities like Alexandria and Egypt.

Some of the indigenous Egyptians are still around and are Coptic Christians (converted right after death of Christ). But, they are given 2nd-class status and are not able to hold positions in government and universities. They must pay a tax to remain in Egypt as non-Muslims.

The tax they pay affords them "Dhimmi" status - an Islamic law for non-believers.

So, since Arabs now populate most of Egypt it is considered part of the Middle East.

Both. Egypt is a country on the continent of Africa and is also considered a middles eastern country as it shares the Mediterranean sea and the Persian gulf.

Its in middle africa and North east.
no no no..wait..it's in North Africa and sometimes people from the "west" refer to us (plus a few dozen of countries around) as "middle east" the same way some people refer to Europe and North America as "the west"
so it's technically both..

Hi,

The answer to this is simple-'Both'.

Egypt is located on the continent of Africa, but the area it lies in is also called the 'Middle East'.

So either version is correct.

Cheers,

Both.

North Africa tells you which continent it is in.
Middle East gives you the culture. Middle East is not a continent, it is an area.
