sew whatever flag you like but you won't be treated any differently because most of us here apart from a few bigots like you Americans. so just come over here and enjoy yourself

no, its really not that bad.
people like to take the piss (as the British say) about Americans but most will take you as an individual. Europeans are more cosmopolitan than Americans, so preconceptions less often cross the line into boorishness.
Also, most casual acquaintances won't even be that nosy about where you're from. Most travellers speak English so thats no distinction.
A little humor goes a long way. If someone asked if I was an American, sometimes I'd say, "guilty".
Try not to be obnoxious, and you may cause a few people to reconsider some of their generalized impressions about Americans.
That was one of the more satisfying experiences about my travels.. hearing someone say, "Are you sure you're an American?" and "are there more like you there?"

As long as you don't sew the stars and stripes on, you will be ok. But peope over here in good ol Europeland are pretty sharp and they know a lot about Canada. Especially in France. So beware - your true identity might be uncovered. They might even get to thinking you stole the backpack from a canadian!

If you are a proud Canadian, yes!
Also put something on your backpack that's uniquely you. Everytime you have to pick it up in baggage, you'll see it stands out, making it easy to identify at a distance, discouraging theft (because it's too identifiable) and making it easy to describe if it is stolen.
