I often have similar problems with optical drives and components...
The problem is the laser's lens cover gets dust/dirt/debris on it from air being sucked into the computer by the power supply fan. Especially pet owners.
The fix is easy but tedious, and no a disk cleaner wont do it.
I have also repaired CD , DVD players and PS2's of the same...
So you have to remove the drive from the drive bay, disconnect the audio, EIDE and power connections.
Carefully pop off the front bezel.
Remove the case screws.
Open the drive carefully.
Carefully move the disk loading tray to reveal the laser lens.
Take a Q tip with slight amount of alcohol on it.
And lightly swab the lens cover.
Reassemble!

You didn't say how old the CD/DVD drive is. Does the drive spin up at all? Does your operating system recognize its existence? If the OS doesn't display the drive, it's probably dead. Erratic or no recognition of a disc is a good sign the drive has had it. Laptop or desktop, same thing.

You could have deleted the driver for the combo, or you may have a bad drive all together. Look for the installation disc that should come with your computer. If you do not have one, contact the manufacturer.

If you reinstall the drivers, and it still does not work, you may need to think about buying another one.
