Also, can I find out where they are coming from?

I've only lived here for a year and only saw some outside last summer

If you have carpenter ants, they are difficult to kill and can eat your home like termites. Whatever you use, be careful that kids can't get into it. I've not had luck with ant baits but have used poisens that say they are for ants. There are products that are long lasting and that you can spray into the cracks and molding. When you are done inside, get a good lasting spray poisen and spray around the base of your house, around all windows and doors, under all window air conditioners and anywhere you see movement. Poke around all planters-inside and under-bases of plants, any wood laying around and look for where these guys are coming from. There may be several places. You will have to spray a few time because ants are very, very resiliant. Go to Home Depot or a hardware store. The correct poisen will have a picture of an ant on the front and you want one that will last for six weeks or so.

The first year in my new house I was overridden with ants. I bought Raid's Double Control Ant bait and it REALLY helped! I was amazed at how effective it is.

Apparently they eat the bait and take it back to the nest. The other ants get the scent from the first ant that this is food. They all decide to trot on over and get some for themselves. However, they are secretly taking poison back to be fed to the queen and baby ants.

I throw a few outside and in the house every Spring and it helps a great deal.

Update to answer other question

It would be difficult to find out where they are coming from exactly. The tiny cracks between the frame of your house and the foundation is enough for them. Also, holes in the wall for outlets and pipes as well as cracks on the baseboard over the drywall provide enough room for them to get in.

It's kind of hard to find the exact spot, but ants will get in almost any where they can. If you have a basement, try checking down there. Where ever there's a crack or small opening they will come in.
I would use Terro ant traps and set them where children or pets do not have access. I had ants get in through my kitchen window because of a very tiny hole in the corner of the window. I just set the traps on the window sill and that solved the problem.
Good Luck.

The best thing I have found is Ortho Home Defense Max.
You can use it inside or outside and it works for months.

The main problem is that you may have a nest in the walls. I had bad problems with big ants last year. Mostly in the kitchen.
I tore down my covered porch last year and found 2 huge nests in the wood and then 1 huge nest between the layers of shingles in the old roof. I destroyed all of the nests, replaced the roof (was doing that anyway).
Since then - no ants.
Remember - they love moisture. They were living and breeding in saturated wood areas in my porch and roof. If you have water seeping and settling in the walls, etc., you will have insects. Sometimes I would come home and find a few just sitting in the sink, not moving, just collecting water.

They sound like carpenter ants. I've had good results with Terro products. I once paid an exterminator $200 for a ghost ant problem. They came out twice, and still didn't get rid of these ants. I bought some Terro syrup. It worked within two days and cost me $4.00.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.

Use RAID ant "feeder" type of pesticide and not the spray kind.
