i have a 1997 jeep wrangle se with a 4 cyl inline engine with manual transmission and whenever i start my car the engine makes kind of a thump and my shift (which is usually in neutral) goes from side to side rapidly and then when the engine is idling on its own without my key pressing the ignition it runs fine and works perfectly. but i am worried that something is wrong with my vehicle! i have looked up to the definition of spark knock as that is the only kind of negative condition that my manual says anyhting about that has to do with the engine i do not think it is that as mine only does it on start up and only for a split second (as when it turns over) i will put higher octane fuel in and im hoping that being a 4 cyl its doing that because it is off balance and turning over creates alot of vibration i just got this vehicle a few days ago and just want to know if this is notmal operation as none of my other 4 cyl cars do this. thankyou for any responces i hope nothing is wrong

The inline engine generates a lot of torque. If you drive off-road a lot, your engine mounts are likely worn. I would get them checked. They don’t cost much. You may also note a rattle in the exhost.

Mine started doing this when I shut the engine off. The exhaust also rattles. This all started when I hit a tree that was laying in the road.

What Charlie says, check the engine & tranny mounts, sounds like one is broken or loose.
