I know that most downloads come from a server (??)
What size is one of these servers-I am picturing a computer the size of the primitive one's that was in the 70's (showing my age)

Also e-mails come from a server. Now these hold millions of e mails so what size is this server?

Any help appreciated

As everyone has pointed out they come in many different sizes. And usually are spec'ed in 1U, 2U, 3U, ... Where a U is the height of the computer and is about 1 1/2 inches high. It can be that small in height because they are about 2 feet wide and 3 feet long. These are then put into racks where the rack may reach above a man's height. And then there may be many racks. The main point here is that when you think of a server like Yahoo, you are actually talking about racks and racks of computers that will service all the requests that come in.

Also they may have racks and racks for hard drives and network equipment and backup and that kind of things.

Servers come in many different sizes, ranging from the HUGE ones to the smaller ones you can find in the basement. From my point of view, Yahoo must be using the big ones coz we get 1GB+ email capacity right? The big ones are also used for webhosting.

Servers can, and usually are, only about the size of your standard desktop system now days.
