I'll say that I got through a public education without wearing a uniform and it worked out fine, but conditions were different then and there was a dress code. We didn't have nearly the gang problem that many schools have today, and it was easier then for a school administrator to just send some kid home to change if he was wearing anything too radical.
I guess that to some extent some people see school uniforms as a way to combat the gangs and otherwise reinforce certain perceived educational values. I imagine too that you could argue that if a school uniform is required, there'd be fewer kids being knifed over a pair of sneakers or the color of a t-shirt.
I suppose that school uniforms might be appropriate for some school districts.

I personally think they're for the birds. I can fully understand other people's view on them. Still I hate them all the same. I see public school students wearing these horrible khaki pants and 100% cotton shirts. I don't know if anyone noticed but khaki pants are very hard to maintain. Too much ironing and worrying about tears and shrinking. Those shirts are no picnic either. They shrink after the first wash. They also fade fairly quickly. If you have any white ones you surely have a chore on your hands. They are easily stained and too much bleaching causes holes. I know people say uniforms give each student a sense of equality. They're wrong! You can make every student in the world wear the same clothes right down to their underwear. There will still be bullying and teasing. You can make every student wear the same haircut. There will still be bullying and teasing. Uniforms will not ready student for the real world either. Think about it. When your child leaves high school they hopefully will go to college. This is the real door to the world. In college they will have the freedom to wear anything they'd like. Most of them throwing on whatever is clean. So what's the point of making them wear uniforms now? I think the only thing uniforms do is give students a desire to get out of them. Plus they cost more money. If you go into a store that carries uniforms or dress code type clothing. That also carries regular clothes. You'll find that jeans and T-shirts are much cheaper. If you take a look at our kids today you'll see that they have lost their imagination. They aren't stimulated to have one in school or at home. Even video games are taking away the need for imagination with the souped up graphics. Why not let them use their imagination in the clothes they wear? Why not let them have a small taste of freedom? Why take it away just to have a false sense of security? You only get to be a child once.

Just as the military has one uniform, I would like to see one uniform for school children. Many people have to move for reasons of work and other commitments and the uniforms are expensive to buy for the lower income families. If it were the same uniform all over, you would only need to sew on a school colours badge or something so when the children are out in public they can be identified by that way. The uniform is a practical thing as it stops rivalry over who has what and who can afford what. To me that would be a good solution to keep it even all round.

When I was in school, I felt that uniforms rob students of their individuality. Now that I'm a parent, I see that uniforms even the "playing field", so to speak, since everyone will be dressing the same, you can't judge them by what they wear thus personality will naturally play a bigger role in how students treat each other.

School uniforms equalize all students. It allows students to shine for their character and academic traits as opposed to their style or level of parental income.
School uniforms are initially very expensive. However, you are putting out money for new clothes in the fall and in the spring anyway...so its not that bad.
It sure is less laundry and I love that.

nicely - i could hate uniforms because of the fact they stop you from expressing your self. i like to save could be a genuine understatement for me. without uniforms, i does no longer have an excuse to save, for one element - and all and sundry will seem a similar, and you need to no longer have your guy or woman guy or woman type. the way people gown reflects who they are slightly, and that i does no longer pick that taken far off from me. Plus, people continuously get me blended up with others because it is. With uniforms, how can you tell your scholars aside? i'm nonetheless engaged on getting my instructors to undergo in concepts my call. Uniforms does no longer help, till I had my call plastered accross the front. (gruesome.) If I had to placed on uniforms, i could fuss slightly, yet i does no longer have the potential to alter it, then. i could probable develop into obssessed with shoes, or something. yet i could discover positives in it. mothers and dads could be happy because of the fact they does no longer could spend money, you does no longer could spend time determining on the suitable outfit each and all the time, scholars does no longer get bullied for no longer having Juicy Couture, or Hollister, or despite. So there are plus aspects and minus aspects to the two. in spite of the certainty that i does no longer pick uniforms, i ought to work out the way it particularly is a robust determination for the college.

i think that they are ok in an environment where the students clothing has become a constant problem or distraction. unfortionally parents these days don't really monitor what their kids are wearing (especially girls), and then theres the gang cr@p. so, if those problems exist, i think that uniforms are ok. besides, imagine not having to worry about what to wear today, that may be nice.

ergh. school uniforms suck.
i for one hate school uniforms. they totally make everyone look like a geek and unable to express themselves. the only thing that are unrestrained when your school requires uniforms is your underwear and the brand of your shoes, as some schools in my country have school socks too [they are going to promote school bras soon... o.O].
