Whereas anyone else whose picture is taken with the same camera and same roll of film (or memory card) shows up perfectly fine?

I'd hazard a guess that it's probably a latent psychic ability they have. I've never witnessed it, myself, but it sounds intreging.
Pay no attention to the dumb answers to this, btw. You'll probably get a lot.

If you take a picture of someone and it breaks the camera you have probably taken the picture of an alien.
Aliens have the same problem with us,so they just don;t take our picture.
