ok, this is such a gross question. There are mice in this place I live at. I have a cat, and he keeps the mice away (from me). They move inside when it is cold.

Yesturday, my friend saw a rat moving about underneath the porch next door. Now I am scared those things are going to come into this place too. Cause there are mice living in the houses next to me as well. It surprised me that a rat would be about. Can some please let me know if they will or not? I hate having the mice, and they creep me out enough. But rats???? I am freakin' here.

Thank you all for your responses. This is a very old huge house (150yrs) and the landlady is a slum lord! I told the superintendant what my friend saw and his response ... oh yea...I know.
Oh by the way Bingo, I wish that were true, cause then we would see a decline in the rat population. LOL
My solution now ...MOVE!!
thanks again everyone I learned a lot.

Your best protection right now is your cat (the blood enemy of both mice and rats).

Actually, mice are a prey animal for rats. Just by allowing mice in your home you may be setting yourself up for a visit from a rat. Do what you have to do to rid your home of any mice, even if that means keeping your cat in a cage at night for a while while you set up traps.

I would also let your neighbor know that there is a rat living underneath his or her porch. Some rat poison should handle that problem.

Never allow mice or rats to live in or by your home. They are filthy and carry diseases that could affect your cat's health as well as your own.

I live in a warm climate next to water. Mice and rats are a way of life and they constantly try to get in. I have had both and keep up the fight. I felt bad at first but then I learned that everyone here has the same problem. About your question--it seems that when the rats come in, the mice go out. Check your house for holes because the rats will eat their way in and both can walk straight up walls. I repair the holes by filling with poison, mixing whatever filler with poison and steel wool, and then cover with regular stuff. They may eat back through once, but they won't do it twice. I have a lot of plants around my house and they are just ladders for them. And incidentally, mice are filthy and I think much more filthy than rats. Be very careful about cleaning up their mess, it can be deadly. Be sure not to breath any dust in. Rats are very intelligent. I read a study that said that a rat will sample a food source-eat just a bit-if he feels bad he will not come back and eat more and neither will his buddies. My sister swears that she had seen a new type of mouse-almost hairless and bumpy. Her cats-normally aggressive-will not touch the thing. Could be what's going to take over the world after we kill ourselves off with all the poison and stuff. . .

No, we've had rats and mice at the same time. Your kitty is probably your best protection against both, though. Don't set any traps that will catch your cat, but maybe some of those small traps that catch them "humanely" would work. You'd have to find a good place to release the rodents, though.

Rats will eat mice... Rats not living in the same place as mice is not correct.

it's taken me by surprise.in my memory, rats won't live in the same house with mice.but maybe i am going to change my idea.well,i think it's going to be all right if the rats' fighting and competing with mice and when they both become tired ur kitty will appear to win.take care.

yes every rodent can get diseases and bacteria from mice but u can catch the mice and sell them for about $1.75 so u make money instead of spending it on mice traps best of luck
