Yes it is possible to trace a general location of a computer through it's IP address. Every ISP is allotted a certain IP range for their customers. From the IP address assigned to the user, you can determine who their ISP is, what state and city they are in and possibly what part of the city. With access to the ISP records and servers, it can be determined who the IP address is assigned to by matching it up to the hardware address of their modem. From there a simple records search would give you the customer's physical address. If the customer is issued a static IP address through the Web consortium then you could do a search on various web sites and get the address and name of the owner of that IP address.

Publicly available information about an IP address can typically only be traced as far as the ISP that owns it. If the IP happens to correspond to a registered domain name, then perhaps the domain registration might provide a little more information - or not.

It's the ISP that assigns the IP address to an individual device on the internet. And a good ISP will not reveal to whom they've allocated the address to just anyone. In fact, my assumption is that legal action and possibly law enforcement of some sort would be required for an ISP to release that information.

So don't go expecting to find a lot of information based on an IP address unless you've got a valid and defensible reason. And conversely, while technically it is possible to track down an IP address to a specific machine and location, it's not easy, and it's not something that the general public can do.

I am sure that a hacker can figure out information from the IP address on, but "arin.net" provides the ability to search for any person's IP address and find the location of their internet provider, and not the address or name of the actual person. That is as far as a normal person can get. You can rest easy :)

It can't exactly pin-point the exact location, but it can help you trace someone to the city. But, it is possible for the government to track someone down by reffering to the ISP of the IP address.

They do that on TV all the time. The reality is that although you can get a general neighborhood, it is very difficult to pinpoint to a computer just using an IP address. The only exception would be law enforcement who have extra privileges but I am not familiar with the laws on how much information they are granted without a warrant.

Certain sites will give you the IP's service provider's city.
But advanced programs and goverment websites CAN track exact locations.

Not the exact location but getting to the city is possible. Unless of course you have direct access to your ISP's log files then you know just who and where the connection is.

yes that is why everyone has one which is unique and also the reason why it is called an address.

the government normally uses it to trace unlawful activities, hackers, pedophiles, people committing fraud...so that there is no where to hide.

everything you do is tracked which doesn't sound like a nice thing especially for law abiding citizens but if it helps eradicate unlawful activity then that has to be done.
