Is the "known" thief hanging with your friend when you are with him too. If so I would have a talk with my friend and tell him that he may be willing to be in the wrong place at the wrong time with this guy but you are not. Then tell your friend that you enjoy his company and will be happy to hang out with him when the thief is not around. You need to be careful. Many have gone to jail for serious crimes just because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time in the company of the wrong people.

well have you heard the saying .....lay down with dogs you get fleas...,, it mean soon are latter, he going to steal again, an 9 out of 10 you be with him,,,but they say a good friend would sit be side you in jail,,,

If you trust him not to take anything from you, sure. But if he wants you to start stealing with him or help him when he steals things, do not get involved.
