Any patient who is suspect of having a traumatic brain injury is first assessed by the Glasgow Coma Scale. The next step would commonly be a cat scan. TBI can be diagnosed by any physician who has access to the proper equipment. The Glasgow scale is often used by nurses during assessment of patients, and may be performed several times while under a nurses care to assess for changes. Generally, treatment for mild TBI is therapy (both physical and/or occupational). In more severe cases, or if changes in the patients level of consciousness are noted, surgery may be needed along with therapy. Any surgery to the brain should be performed by a neurologist.

The doctor has a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) criteria to follow, these are visual response, motor response, and verbal responses.

TBI is where a brain injury is caused by an external physical force, which causes total or partial functional disability, or a psychosocial impairmant. This applies to open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, such as cognition; speech and language; memory; attention; reasoning; abstract thinking; communication; judgment; problem solving; sensory, perceptual and motor abilities; psychosocial behavior; physical functions; information processing; and executive functions, such as organizing, evaluating and carrying out goal–directed activities. The term does not apply to brain injuries that are congenital or degenerative, or brain injuries induced by birth trauma.
